Christmas Date Night: Canton Square, Southern Lights, and Beyond

Central Mississippi doesn't get snow most years, but it turns out we don't need it. Between Canton's century-old light tradition and a brand-new festival that just landed in Pearl, this part of the state does Christmas date night better than people give it credit for.

The Classic: Canton Square

If you've never walked Canton's Historic Courthouse Square during the holidays, put it on the list this year. The whole square gets strung with well over 100,000 lights, the courthouse gets its big lit tree, and horse-drawn carriage rides loop the block while the merchants along the square hand out hot cider. It's genuinely one of the prettiest small-town Christmas scenes in the state, and it's built for exactly what you're picturing — a slow walk, hands cold enough that holding hands is practical instead of just romantic, and an excuse to duck into a shop for something warm.

The festival typically runs from Thanksgiving weekend through December 23rd, though the exact 2026 dates hadn't been posted as of this writing — Canton usually confirms in October, so it's worth a quick check before you plan the night, but the tradition itself is dependable enough to build around now.

Good for: the classic, low-pressure first Christmas date, or the couple who's been together a while and just wants a pretty night out without a big production.

The New One: Southern Lights at Trustmark Park

Here's the one most people haven't done yet, because it didn't exist until last year — The Southern Lights at Trustmark Park, right here in Pearl. It's a full ballpark transformed into a walk-through holiday festival: millions of lights, a real ice skating rink, glowing color tunnels, fire pits with s'mores, and themed sections like Gingerbread Land and the Twelve Days of Christmas path.

It's a bigger night out than a quiet square walk — more like a proper date, with things to actually do together instead of just scenery. Skating together (badly, probably, and that's part of the fun) is one of those activities that gets people laughing and touching each other without either of you having to try.

Good for: a date that has some activity built in, a slightly bigger-budget night, or introducing the relationship to "we do fun things together" energy.

The Low-Key Option: Just the Lights and a Drive

Not every Christmas date needs a ticket or a plan. Central Mississippi neighborhoods go hard on home displays every December, and an unplanned drive through Brandon or the nicer Ridgeland streets with hot chocolate in the cupholders and a Christmas playlist going is its own kind of date — free, unhurried, and honestly underrated. Pair it with a stop at one of our favorite date night spots for dinner first, and you've got a full night without spending much at all.

Brandon also runs its own drive-through show, Magic of Lights, out at the Amphitheater grounds most seasons — worth checking if you'd rather stay in the car than walk a festival.

The Weekend Away: New Orleans and the Coast

If a night isn't enough and you want to make a whole weekend of it, Christmas is one of the best times of year to head down to New Orleans or the coast — and you don't need a special occasion to justify it, just cold weather and a free Saturday.

City Park's Celebration in the Oaks is the big one: over a million lights strung through the historic oaks, a driving tour if you'd rather stay warm or a walking tour if you want access to the Botanical Garden and the amusement park rides. It runs from late November through New Year's Day, so there's a wide window to work with. One more thing worth knowing if you're driving that direction anyway: along the river parishes outside the city — St. James Parish especially — there's a genuinely old Cajun tradition of lighting bonfires on the levee on Christmas Eve, originally meant to help light Santa's way. It's not a ticketed event, just a real local practice, and if your route takes you along the river after dark on the 24th, it's a striking thing to see together.

If the coast fits your plans better than the city does, Bay Saint Louis and Ocean Springs both do their own quieter version of holiday charm — smaller crowds, walkable downtowns, and a lot less driving once you're actually there. Either way, book the room ahead of time; December weekends in both New Orleans and on the coast fill up fast.
